The Nipmuc are a state recognized tribe with three active bands in Massachusetts: Chaubunagungamaug (Webster/Dudley), Hassanamisco (Grafton), and Natick.

"Native lands are still being encroached upon, so do we still, to this day, worry and wait."

Sylvia Simmons, Natick Nipmuc

The Hassanamisco  Nipmuc’s 3 1/2 acre Hassanamisco Reservation in Grafton is on land that was once part of Hassanamesit, and has been continuously owned and occupied by Nipmuc people since before colonization. The Chaubunagunamaug homelands and people straddle Massachusetts and Connecticut, with a reservation that spans the border from Webster, MA to Thompson, CT.

Nipmuc people live all over the United States, including on their ancestral lands in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The Nipmuc bands are active communities who organize regular gatherings. The Natick Nipmuc host an annual social event. The Hassanamisco and Chaubunagungamaug bands both hold annual pow wows. Nipmuc bands also host other events throughout the year, such as Strawberry Moon Festivals and an annual sacred paddle to Deer Island to return to their ancestors and remember them.
